A Study on the Family Dynamics of Adolescent Runaway in Korea

Abstract
The present study was intended to examine the relationship between school adolescents¢¥ runaway and its structural, demographic, and psychological variables of the family. Data were collected through questionnaire survey. Subjects served for the study consisted of 4,060 adolescent students in Korea, sampled from Korean student population, using three stage clustered random sampling method. Their age range was between 12 and 21. The actual number of cases put into the analyses was 3,602 including 2,295 boys and 1,307 girls.
Data were analysed by CDC-174 computer of KIST, using SPSS program. Statistical methods employed were ?2 multiple classification analysis, multiple regression analysis, and partial correlation analysis.
Results of the study were presented below.
1. Among the sampled adolescents of 3,438, 550 students(16. 0%) have had runaway experiences. They showed some variation in the frequency of runaway. The runaway experiencing only once was 209(16.0%), twice and three times, 184(5.4%), and more than four times, 157(4.6%). Runaway drive was also experienced by 46.2% of the respondents. Sex difference in runaway behavior was revealed. Males showed three times higher proportion in runaway behavior compared with females. However, in runaway drive, there was no difference between two sexes. Data also revealed that runaway drive correlated positively with runaway behavior above significance level (p<.05), which means that internal drive for runaway is likely to be manifested into- behavioral form.
2. The age group in high school years showed the highest proportion of runaways. It can be inferred from this finding that high school students might experience high anxiety.
